Trip to Carrick (Cannon, Gille

Trip to Carrick (Cannon, Gille

This album was inspired by a series of recordings made by Tom Ennis, James Morrison and John Muller, who recorded twelve sides for Columbia and Vocalion in New York between June 1922 and April 1923. The somewhat unusual combination of pipes, fiddle and piano lent these sides a distinctive sound which we've attempted to recreate here. The repertoire has been drawn from a wider range of sources including early wax cylinder and 78 recordings made in Ireland and in the USA, later private and commercial recordings of the great traditional musicians of the 50s, 60s and 70s as well as the Scots Gaelic singing tradition. The album was recorded over a series of three weekends in the kitchen of a cottage in Bogagh, near Carrick, Co. Donegal. All tracks were recorded live, i.e. playing together without acoustic separation.
